Emanuel Ungaro‘s creative director Fausto Puglisi takes us back to the roots of the brand, proclaiming a collection that is “100% Ungaro”. The glamorous 80s comes back in full steam, a trend that we’ve already seen gaining traction in the past few years, and here Puglisi showcases his version in all its unadulterated glory.
The collection nods to the rebellious, free-spirited Princess Stephanie of Monaco who left quite an impression on the Italian designer. We are treated to massive ruffles and frilled shoulders that spill in every direction alongside clashes of loud pastels and bold floral prints. The one-shouldered, bustier prom dress that would normally be hidden away deep in our closets is revisited, brought back with a dose of classic Ungaro charm.
Puglisi embraces Ungaro’s legacy with a proper stamp of his own with leather dresses, sleek jumpsuits and boxy dresses in cream and black. Oversized coats and thick waist belts honed in the designer’s vision without making it cliché. Another designer might have stuck too much to the stereotypical eighties silhouettes, but this is a collection that is as elegant as it is an iconic addition to Emanuel Ungaro’s repertoire.
